Sandra Nankoma is a Ugandan singer, song writer, poet, actress and photographer. Nankoma went musically professional in 2013. Her solo music career first took stage at the 2013 Bayimba International Festival of the Arts at the National Theatre and later at the Joel Sebunjo concert, Africa is the Future at the same venue. She continued to surge, performing alongside Suzan Kerunen, Jackie Akello, Maurice Kirya, Sylvester and Abramz and Myko Ouma at the 2014 World Music Day.
As Nankoma continued to grow as an artist, she shared stages with Geofrey Oryema at the innaugural Bayimba Honors, Grammy Award winner Skyler Jett (USA), Soleil Laurent and Quantum Split (USA), Kareyce Fotso (Cameroon), Joey Blake (USA), and One People Band (SA) at Rwanda’s premiere music festival Kigali Up in 2016.
A winner of the 2017 Visa pour la creation Award by Institut Francais, Nankoma has also performed at the La Cite Des Arts International Paris in Concert in October and in the same year September, she performed at the Opening of Festival Des Villes Du monde 20th Anniversary, on the boat cruise with many revealers on the river. Nankoma also performed at the 2017 MaMa Festival and Conference in France, of which she was also a delegate.
The vocal soul star covers the musical baselines of Jazz and soul-ballad with a distinctive identity and tune that will break barriers of an African soul singer and take the world by storm. Her biggest influences are the 60-90s legends of soul like Farida Sonko, Miriam Makeba, Anita Baker, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu – her music is about sharing these generations.
Apart from music Nankoma also creates works in other mediums such as theatre and photography.
Also a professional photographer, in 2017, Nankoma used her photography skills to address issues related to skin color discrimination in an exhibition dubbed – Melanin Kaddugala where she mixed media with her music and photography. In the same line she created a campaign against skin bleaching and dark skin discrimination musically and visually through her Kaddugala single off the ALBUM YE’NZE.
